NFL: Falcons sign veteran OL Newberry

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons have added depth to their offensive line by signing Jeremy Newberry, the former longtime starting center for the San Francisco 49ers.
Newberry (6 feet 5, 315 pounds) started three games for San Diego last season after starting each of his 14 games with Oakland in the 2007 season.
Newberry, a second-round pick by San Francisco in 1998, was charged with allowing five sacks as a rookie in 1999 but only 2.5 in his next six seasons with the 49ers, according to STATS, Inc.
The 33-year-old Newberry started every game in the 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 seasons with San Francisco and was a Pro Bowl pick in 2001 and 2002.
Terms of Newberry’s deal with the Falcons were not released on Monday.
