VIDEO: Bobby Nash gives back to UH basketball
Bobby Nash has a loco moco dish named after him in Japan, but he'll be serving spaghetti tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Nash, a former standout for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team, will be a guest instructor at a parent/child basketball camp today.
The unique camp allows parents to participate in drills with their children.
Nash has agreed to sponsor a spaghetti dinner for all participants after the drills are completed.
"I've seen A.C. Carter and other professional guys come back here and give something back," he said. "I want to make that a tradition. For me, especially, this program is where I grew up. I was going to these camps when I was 4 or 5, all the way to when I was 16 or 17."
The camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 17. Entry fee is $50 per child.
The drills will start at 5 p.m., so families that are not pre-registered are encouraged to arrive early.
Bobby Nash is the son of current UH head coach Bob Nash.
"We like this camp because it's about family," Bob Nash said. "Mom or dad — or both — can work with their kid, and it gives them a better chance to understand the routine of certain drills. Then they can go home and work on it together."
Bobby Nash last played for UH during the 2007-08 season.
He played for the Shiga Lakestars in a Japanese professional league last season. He finished second on the team with 16.0 points per game, and also contributed 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
"The Japanese game is a lot faster and a lot more physical than college, so it was a year of transition for me," said Bobby, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward. "But I feel like I got better as the season went on."
He has been invited to return to the Lakestars next season.
He was popular enough to have an item named after him at the concession stands for home games. When team officials discovered that Bobby liked loco mocos — hamburger patty, fried egg, rice and gravy — they put it on the menu.
"I was eating it all the time just because I need my slice of Hawai'i," Bobby said. "When they said they were going to sell 'Bobby Nash Loco Moco' I was like, 'uh ... ok.' They ordered 50 for the first game and sold it for $7 each and they ran out. It was crazy."

TRANSFER EXPECTED TO SIGN WITH UH THIS WEEK
Aleksandar Milovic, a 6-foot-7 forward, is expected to transfer from Duquesne to Hawai'i. His paperwork should be completed this week.
Milovic, who is originally from Montenegro, was a seldom-used reserve at Duquesne as a freshman last season. He averaged 21.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a high school senior in Montenegro.
He will have to sit out the 2009-10 season at UH due to NCAA transfer rules, but will have three seasons of eligibility after that.
