Ezekiel Lau of Honolulu was king for a day in the Kewalo Basin surf last weekend.

Lau won the Quiksilver King of the Groms contest in 2- to 4-foot waves on Sunday.

He received $600 and a trip to France for the victory. As the Hawai'i champion, Lau will compete against other region winners at the King of the Groms World Final at France in September.

The contest is for surfers age 16 and younger. Lau, 15, recently completed his freshman year at Kamehameha Schools.

Luke Hitchcock of Kaua'i placed second, Josh Moniz of Honolulu was third, and Ian Gentil of Maui was fourth.

MILITARY SURF CLASSIC SET FOR NEXT WEEKEND

The HIC/Quiksilver All Military Surf Classic is scheduled for June 20 and 21 at White Plains Beach.

The contest is open to active military personnel, retirees and their dependents. There will be various age divisions for both shortboard and longboard surfing.

ASING TAKES SECOND AT CALIFORNIA JUNIOR PRO

Keanu Asing of 'Ewa Beach placed second at the Arnette All Day Antics Junior Pro contest last weekend at Newport Beach, Calif.

Nat Young of California won the contest. He edged Asing in the final, 14.25-13.05.

Many of the nation's top surfers under 21 entered the two-day contest.

The top finishers in the contest earned points toward qualifying for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championship at the end of the year. Granger Larsen of Maui tied for fifth place.

RABBIT KEKAI CONTEST MOVING TO O'AHU

After 13 years in Costa Rica, the Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic will move to Waikiki this year.

The event is scheduled to run Aug. 23 to 29 at Kuhio Beach.

The contest will feature professional divisions for both men and women. Most of Hawai'i's top competitors are expected to enter, including 2008 world champion Bonga Perkins.

The contest was created in 1996 to honor surfing legend Rabbit Kekai, who is in his 80s and still surfs.
