African-American artifacts related to Isles being sought
The African American Diversity Cultural Center Hawai'i is looking for artifacts owned by African-Americans that are connected to Hawai'i and the Pacific islands. Artifacts may be displayed at the 50th anniversary of statehood celebration.
Most importantly, the center is searching for the July 1959 issue of Ebony magazine, which focused on blacks living in Hawai'i and highlighted the Nolle Smith family.
The center was established in 1997 as a museum to document 200 years of African-American history in Hawai'i. It displays documents, photographs, artwork, mu'umu'u, church robes and other artifacts.
