First big swell of summer likely to last into tomorrow
The summer's first big south swell, which arrived Sunday, is expected to continue into today and tomorrow, city lifeguards said.
"This is our first real surf of the summer," Ocean Safety Lt. Bill Ingram said. "Schools are out, so we've got a lot of people, a lot of surfers. We've got our full-force personnel out."
Lifeguards expect surf heights to exceed the eight-foot advisory level.
The city Department of Emergency Services reported making one rescue and assisting 40 other swimmers at Waikiki Beach yesterday. Lifeguards also were proactive, taking preventive actions such as warning people 355 times at Waikiki Beach and 85 times at Ala Moana Beach Park.
Lifeguards advise people to swim at guarded locations, heed all warning signs and to not swim alone.
