Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a second-round, 4-under-par 68 yesterday and was four shots behind the leaders at the LPGA State Farm Classic at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill.

Wie was at 6-under 138 and tied for 16th entering the weekend. Suzann Pettersen (66) and Se Ri Pak (68) were the co-leaders at 134.

Wie has made the cut in all eight of her LPGA tournaments this season.

After a bogey on the par-5 first hole, Wie was bogey free the rest of the way, with five birdies, including four on the back nine.

Helen Alfredsson made the biggest move of he day, firing a 63 to join Kristy McPherson (66), first-round co-leader Jee Young Lee (69), Kris Tamulis (68) and Moira Dunn (66) at 9 under.

"I think sometimes you just see the line," said Alfredsson, who made seven birdies and an eagle with no bogeys. "It comes easy to you when you look at it. When you do, you can strike the ball well."

FURYK, BYRD TIED ATOP THE MEMORIAL

DUBLIN, Ohio — One last birdie for Jim Furyk put him one more stroke under par, which he found more gratifying than being in a share of the lead with Jonathan Byrd yesterday at the Memorial.

A blue sky and a warm sun translated into fast greens at Muirfield Village, leading to a crammed leaderboard going into a weekend loaded with possibilities.

Tiger Woods had his worst score in nearly two years — a 2-over 74 — and still was only six shots behind.

Furyk had two bogeys from bunkers on the back nine, but finished by sinking an 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th that gave him a 2-under 70.

Byrd had a bogey-free 68 in the morning, also making a birdie on the 18th.

They were at 7-under 137.

Asked how he felt about being tied for the lead, Furyk replied, "I'd rather be as many under par as possible."

Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin, a Punahou and UCLA alum, followed his opening-round 81 with a 78 yesterday and missed the cut with a 159 total.

LANGER IN FINANCIAL CLASSIC LEAD WITH A 65

LAKEWAY, Texas — Bernhard Langer birdied the par-3 18th hole for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke lead yesterday after the first round of the Triton Financial Classic.

David Eger birdied 17 and 18 for a 66 at The Hills Country Club.

Michael McCullough was at 67. Tom Kite, Mark O'Meara, Mark Wiebe, Mark James, Dana Quigley, Jeff Sluman and Larry Mize opened with 68s.

SCOTLAND'S RAMSAY IN WALES OPEN LEAD

NEWPORT, Wales — Richie Ramsay of Scotland shot a 4-under 67 yesterday to lead the Wales Open after the second round, while U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin made the cut with some help from the weather.

Ramsay was at 7-under 135 to lead Robert Rock (68) and Ross Fisher (66) of England by one stroke.

Pavin shot a second straight 72 at Celtic Manor and looked likely to be outside the cutoff. Instead, skies darkened, rain fell and scores rose during the afternoon, leaving him safe for the weekend.
