USA Hockey Inline showdown at Mililani

The 2009 USA Hockey Inline Summer Showdown, featuring about 200 players ages 6-19 in five divisions from four islands, will be held June 12 to 14 at Kaoma'aiku Neighborhood Park in Mililani.

Games will be played from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday with championship games Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.

All teams are guaranteed to play a minimum of three games. Teams from O'ahu, Kaua'i, Maui and the Big Island will compete.

Any team that wins a championship will have an opportunity to compete on the Mainland in the Western Region.

MEYER FALLS TO 12TH

Hilo's Gregory Meyer shot a 3-over-par 74 yesterday to drop from the lead into a tie for 12th place after the second round of the UBS Japan Golf Tour Championship at Shishido Hills Country Club in Kasama, an hour northeast of Tokyo.

Yuri Igarishi (67) and I.J. Jang (64) were tied for the lead at 8-under 134, five strokes ahead of Meyer, who opened with a 65 on Thursday.

SERVE UP SCHOLARSHIPS

Kapa'a High School's Lyndsey Tom and Hawai'i Baptist's Mari Tadaki were awarded scholarships by USTA Serves, the charitable arm of the U.S. Tennis Association. Tom and Tadaki represented the Hawai'i Pacific Section among the 71 high school students from across the country who earned grants totaling $379,000.

The grants are awarded annually to deserving students who have participated in USTA and other organized youth tennis programs, have demonstrated high academic achievement and have shown financial need.

Tom was one of 52 students to receive a $6,000 college education scholarship, for "excelling academically, demonstrating community service and participating in an organized tennis program."

Tadaki was one of 12 to receive $1,000 for college textbooks or supplies.

SHORT LOBS: Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific's women's teams finished 1-2 in the final NCAA Division II West Region ranking of the season, with University of Hawai'i-Hilo fifth and Chaminade ninth. The Seasiders were third in the final national poll, and HPU No. 12.

On the men's side, Hawai'i Pacific, BYUH and Hilo were 1-2-3 in the West, with HPU sixth nationally.

The UH-Manoa men, who won their second straight WAC title, finished a program-best 41st nationally. UH sophomore Dennis Lajola was 69th in singles.

CORRECTION

Taylor Kauweloa of Damien was named as an outfielder to the Interscholastic League of Ho-nolulu's all-star baseball team. His name was misspelled in Wednesday's Advertiser.
