A new law tightens rules for when a product can be labeled as “Made in Hawaii.”

Gov. Linda Lingle signed the bill this week, which clarifies requirements and directs the Department of Agriculture to come up with enforcement recommendations.
The law falls short of proposals to increase requirements for the amount of Hawaii labor or materials in a product.
Current law states that items with more than half of the finished produced processed and packaged in Hawaii may carry the label. The measure had proposed to increase the requirement from 51 percent to 65 percent, but that effort fell short during the legislative process.
The law is meant to let customers know whether products from candy to grass hula skirts are imported or if they really come from Hawaii.
