Cleveland Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore could need arthroscopic surgery if two more weeks of rest don't calm his inflamed left elbow.

Sizemore, placed on the disabled list Sunday, would likely not return to the lineup until late July if surgery is needed.

The All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner is batting .223, with nine home runs and 31 RBIs. He set career-highs last year with 33 homers, 90 RBIs and 38 stolen bases.

"There is no structural damage to the elbow," Indians trainer Lonnie Soloff said.

Sizemore will be reevaluated when he is eligible to come off the disabled list. If the elbow is still sore, he will then have the surgery, which comes with a recovery time of four to six weeks.

Doctor pleads guilty to steroid charges: A doctor accused of supplying professional baseball players with illegal performance-enhancing drugs pleaded guilty to two federal criminal charges yesterday, according to a newspaper report.

The New York Daily News reported that California-based Dr. Ramon Scruggs, who was accused in the Mitchell Report of having prescribed steroids and HGH to several Major League players, appeared in a U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif.

He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids and human growth hormone and one count of money laundering. His sentencing is set for Sept. 14.

Cardinals: St. Louis third baseman Troy Glaus has been cleared to resume baseball activities, although the best case scenario calls for a return in mid-to-late July. Glaus has been working out in Arizona with a personal trainer after hitting a snag in his rehab from shoulder surgery in January.

Mets: New York outfielder Carlos Beltran missed his second straight game yesterday with a stomach virus. Jeremy Reed was his replacement, and first baseman Daniel Murphy was moved up from sixth to Beltran's No. 3 spot in the batting order.
