Classes canceled at Heald after man suffers electrical burns

Heald College will be for classes today after an electrician was critically injured while working in an electrical vault room.

Heald College, located at 1500 Kapiolani Blvd., will announce later whether it will hold Wednesday classes, according to a recorded message left by Heald.
A male electrician in his late 50s was working on electrical distribution equipment in an electrical vault room at the bottom corner of a Heald College building when witnesses heard a “loud explosion like a loud bang,” said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. “They saw a bright flash and smelled burning and saw smoke.”
The electrician walked out of the electrical vault room and firefighters responding to the 12:09 p.m. call later found him sitting down. Seelig said he was conscious and talking.
“He had burn marks on his body like from a flash fire,” Seelig said.
City paramedics brought the man to a local area hospital, where he is in critical condition, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's emergency services department.
All power went out in the building. Firefighters suspect that an arc occurred between the electrical equipment and the man’s plastic bucket, which contained his tools, Seelig said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and pushed smoke out of the room.
Power to adjacent businesses was temporarily disrupted when Hawaiian Electric Co. shut off power to allow Heald College to repair its equipment, HECO spokesman Darren Pai said.
