Ciera Min, a high school freshman from Hilo, remained in the top five at the 41st annual Trusted Choice Big "I" National Championship yesterday in Ardmore, Okla. Min fired a 4-over-par 76 in the third round and is tied for fifth, seven shots off the lead going into today's final round.
On the boys' side, Justin Keiley, a senior from Ha'iku, shot 73 and is tied for 15th, 13 shots out of first.
At the 34th Junior PGA Championship in Cincinnati, Hilo native Kimberly Kim shot her second straight 70 and is tied for fourth, five behind leader Alexis Thompson, who won this tournament in 2006.
Kim, who lost in the U.S. Junior Girls final last weekend, moved to Arizona for high school and is heading to the University of Denver this fall.
Kyung Kim, who moved to Arizona from Maui, has a share of 21st with a score of 78—150. Hilo's Britney Yada is at 75—155.
In the boys' division, Kane'ohe's Alika Bell is tied for 30th at 75—149. The tournament ends tomorrow.
TADD TO HOST
The March of Dimes will hold its second annual Tadd Fujikawa Invitational Tournament, presented by HMAA, Wednesday at the Kapolei Golf Course. Fujikawa, an 18-year-old golf pro who was born three months premature, is sponsored by HMAA.
The fundraiser features three flights and two-person teams, with a noon start. Fujikawa will host a putting contest and short-game clinic before the tournament. He will also be featured in a closest-to-the-pin challenge on the 12th hole.
"By participating in this tournament, you will support improving the health of babies by funding research to help prevent birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality," said Carmella Hernandez, state director of March of Dimes Hawai'i. "Had Tadd been born before 1970, his story might have been very different."
Last year, 156 golfers teed up in the inaugural tournament and, with the help of 31 sponsors, raised $91,000 for the March of Dimes.
