Toriumi in judo junior worlds

Honolulu's Arnold Toriumi, a 2009 graduate of Punahou School, has earned a spot on USA Judo's Junior World Team.
Toriumi, who belongs to Hawai'i Tenri Judo Club, captured first in the 132-pound division at last weekend's USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships held at Disneyworld in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Toriumi, a two-time state high school champion, entered the Junior Olympics as the top seed and went 4-0 to claim his spot on the Junior World Team.
He is the second Tenri judoka to qualify for the Junior World Team in as many years and was awarded with the Best Technique award.
Also, Kane'ohe's Anthony Kwon won the Outstanding Competitor award after he won the 145-pound division in the Junior Olympics, but lost to California's Kyle Taketa in the Trials.
Honolulu's Chrissy Chow fell in the 115-pound division Junior Olympic final. Sister Mindy Chow upset top-seeded Angelica Delgado in the first final match at 126 pounds, but lost the next two.
At 97 pounds, Honolulu's Taylor Ibera, the 2008 Senior Pan Am champion, also won the first final but lost in the next two to finish second.
The Junior World Championships will be Oct. 22 to 25 in Athens, Greece.
BASEBALL
MILILANI STAYS UNBEATEN
Tanner Tokunaga batted 3 for 4 and Kody Yamada went 2 for 3 as Mililani rallied to beat Campbell, Calif., 8-5, yesterday at the P.O.N.Y. Pony 13 West Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.
Mililani is the only undefeated team in the double-elimination tournament, and will face Campbell again today at 2:30 p.m. (Hawai'i time) in the final.
If Mililani loses, the teams will play again for the title.
Campbell scored four in the third inning to take a three-run lead, but Mililani scored in every remaining inning to pull out the victory.
KOLOHE KREW WINS
Mason O'Blaney hit a two-run homer as Kolohe Krew of Hawai'i defeated Guam, 12-5, yesterday in the opener of the Cal Ripken Minors (ages 9-10) Pacific Southwest Regional in Beaver, Utah.
Winning pitcher Geoffrey Moore and Kailer Kolish each hit a two-run double.
FOOTBALL
ANE AT CONFERENCE
Punahou football coach Kale Ane has been selected to participate in this week's NFL-USA Football Youth Football Summit in Canton, Ohio.
One coach from each state and the District of Columbia were selected for the conference that coincides with the NFL Hall of Fame Weekend. Kane led Punahou to its first state title last year.
Coaches will attend educational seminars with topics such as positive coaching, character development, injury prevention and steroids and supplements.
Youth coaches were also selected to attend the summit. Greta Correa of Kamuela on the Big Island was chosen.
BASKETBALL
BENEFIT FOR BEASLEY
A 3-on-3 basketball tournament and benefit concert in honor of former Roosevelt High School basketball standout Tatiana Beasley will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at Papakolea Community Park.
Beasley, an Advertiser All-State first-team selection in 2006, died at age 21 in a vehicle accident July 19.
Registration for the tournament, which is open to males and females, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7 at Papakolea Park.
The fee is $75 per team, with proceeds going toward funeral expenses for Beasley.
A benefit concert including Hawaiian music and hula will be held after the tournament, from 3 to 9 p.m.
Tickets for the concert will be sold at $15 each.
