ROME — Elsie Windes scored five goals, including the tie-breaker with 4:22 left, and the United States advanced to the championship game of women’s water polo with an 8-7 win over Greece on Wednesday night.
With the Americans clinging to a one-goal lead, goalie Elizabeth Armstrong made a save on Christina Tsoukala’s shot with 2 seconds left to preserve the win and send the U.S. to the gold medal game against Canada on Friday.
Alexandra Asimaki scored three goals for the Greeks, who will meet Russia for the bronze.
Emily Csikos scored three goals to lead Canada to an 8-7 win over Russia in the other semifinal. The Canadians will be going for their first major title in water polo. They have one silver and two bronze medals at worlds, and have never won an Olympic medal.
The U.S. is the only country with a chance to win two medals — the men also reached the semifinals and will face Spain on Thursday.
The U.S. men and women won silver medals at the Beijing Olympics.
