Bishop Museum to celebrate reopening of Hawaiian Hall

Advertiser Staff

The Bishop Museum will celebrate the reopening of its Hawaiian Hall after three years of renovation with a weekend of festivities Aug. 8 and 9.

Private reopening ceremonies will be held at 7 a.m. Aug. 8 and, two hours later, the hall will be opened to the public. The event will begin with a procession at the museum gates that will circle Hawaiian Hall.

Procession participants will include museum staff, royal societies, ali'i trusts, Hawaiian civic clubs, halau and community members. There will be special admission rates of $5 for kama'aina and military; $3 for children 4 to 12; and children under 3 will be admitted free.

The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and activities will include live entertainment, cultural activities, exhibitors, vendors and cultural practitioners. The Hawaiian Hall lecture series will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Atherton Halau where scholars and artists will discuss Hawaiian history, culture and the renovation of the hall.

Hawaiian Hall was built between 1887 and 1903 and underwent its first major renovation over the past three years. The $16 million project included the shielding of the hall's artifacts from destructive ultraviolet rays.

The hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
