PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — A quarter commemorating the U.S. territory of American Samoa enters circulation today, one of six this year.
The quarter, the fourth in a new U.S. Mint series, features a bowl, a whisk and a staff, which are used during ava ceremonies — significant in Samoan culture.
The quarter also includes a coconut tree and the territory's motto, "Samoa, God is First," in Samoan.
It is part of the 10-year program introducing a new quarter every 10 weeks. Quarters for all the 50 states have been issued.
The other quarters introduced this year are the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and Guam.
The mint also will issue quarters from the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands.
