Foam system helps firefighters quickly douse garage fire

Honolulu firefighters using their new compressed air foam system made short work of a small fire in a St. Louis Heights garage yesterday morning.
The system uses a combination of water and foam, with firefighters determining the mix ratio depending on the kind of fire they’re facing.
The resulting product, which fire Capt. Terry Seelig says looks like “shaving cream,” sticks to surfaces, absorbs more heat and uses less water.
On steep St. Louis Heights Drive, the run-off flowing back downhill from the house also made for a dramatic sight.
Seelig said the foam might linger for a while but area residents don’t have to worry. The foam is non-toxic and environmentally safe.
