Honda's owner helps in arrest of suspected car thief
A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of operating a stolen car after he ran from a Paukukalo parking lot and was found hiding in a toolshed Tuesday afternoon, the Maui News reported.
Wade T. Ogawa of Wailuku was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, resisting arrest, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $17,000.
Police were called to the Sack 'N Save Foods parking lot shortly before 5 p.m. after the owner of a stolen brown 1992 Honda Accord saw his car parked there. The license plate of the car had been changed. While the owner's wife called police, he waited by the car until Ogawa came out of the store and went to the vehicle, police said.
When the owner asked where Ogawa got the vehicle, Ogawa said he bought it from a friend and told the owner to wait while he called his friend, police said.
Ogawa ran and was chased by arriving police officers. Wailuku patrol officer Melvin Johnson caught the suspect in a toolshed of a nearby residence where he was hiding, police said.
The car had been reported stolen Sunday from the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, according to police records.
