HONOLULU — A state panel is delaying a decision on whether Rep. Neil Abercrombie can transfer nearly $919,000 from his U.S. House campaign committee to his state gubernatorial campaign account.
The Campaign Spending Commission will consider the issue again next month.
Commissioners spent two hours Thursday hearing from Abercrombie’s lawyer and then discussing whether the 10-term Democratic congressman can transfer money given to his previous House campaigns.
But the panel’s members said state law was unclear on the question. They and Abercrombie attorney Karl Sandstrom also suggested a compromise could be worked out.
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann also is a possible Democratic gubernatorial candidate. His treasury held almost $660,000 as of Dec. 31.
