Golfer loses legal bid to get amateur status back

PORTLAND, Ore. — An online gambler who claimed the USGA was wrong in revoking his amateur status because of his $1 million golf and poker challenge lost a hand in federal court on Monday.
Dusty Schmidt had asked for a preliminary restraining order to have his amateur status reinstated while his appeal of the decision to take it away was considered.
U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mosman turned down the request, saying that Schmidt did not meet the legal standard of a contact with the USGA.
Schmidt may still pursue a legal claim that his amateur status was unfairly revoked. He says he has not decided whether he will do that.
