Mango Fests proliferating like mangoes

Two mango festivals are planned in coming weeks as a late mango season promises a bonanza in late summer and early fall.

On Hawai'i island, the Keauhou Beach Resort is hosting Mango Festival 2009 Aug. 1 with a day of activities, including farmer-chef cooking demonstrations and tastings, presentations on mango growing, exhibits of mango-inspired art and more. Hours are 8 a.m.-noon at the Keauhou Farmers Market at Keauhou Shopping Center, and 2-6 p.m. in the hotel's Royal Garden. A mango dinner is set for 6:30 p.m. with a menu by executive sous chef Cy Yamamoto ($39.95; reservations recommended). Admission to Mango Festival events is free. Information: 808-324-2515.
On O'ahu the annual Makaha Mango Festival takes place Aug. 2 at the Makaha Resort & Golf Club. Day-long activities include best mango and best mango recipe contests, kids' activities, entertainment and workshops and lectures. Information: makahamangofestival.com.
