Alfa Romeo smashed the elapsed time record for monohulls by a day in the Transpacific Yacht Race when it crossed the finish line off Diamond Head early yesterday.
Neville Crichton's Reichel Pugh 100, with a crew of 16, completed the 2,225-nautical-mile crossing in 5 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes, 20 seconds — beating the record set by Hasso Plattner's Morning Glory in 2005 of 6:16:04:11.
Alfa Romeo crossed the finish line at 12:36:20 a.m.
Crichton, a former Hawai'i resident, said the highlight of the race was "crossing the (finish) line in Hawai'i, winning the race and smashing the race record. Alfa Romeo performed faultlessly, taking everything that the race threw at her in her stride."
The remaining 46 boats are vying for elapsed time and corrected time honors.
