Advertiser Staff
Alfa Romeo, Neville Crichton's Reichel Pugh 100, set a 24-hour run record yesterday during the Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Hawai'i.
Alfa Romeo covered 399 nautical miles and surpassed the previous monohull record set by Morning Glory in the 2005 race. It has held the race lead for more than a week.
"We are keeping a watchful eye on the boats that started six days before us and we will pass most of them in the next 24 hours," Alfa Romeo captain Murray Spence reported. "I can only imagine what they are thinking as they see us storming by to the north of them."
Alfa Romeo, whose average over the 24-hour period surpassed 15 knots, is expected to complete the 2,225-nautical mile race on Saturday.
