County suing firm it hired to build affordable housing

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i County is suing a company it contracted with in 2005 to build affordable housing.

The suit filed last week by Corporation Counsel Lincoln Ashida against seeks unspecified damages from UniDev Hawaii.

The county alleges the company submitted false, inaccurate and/or misleading statements that omitted or contained unrealistic assumptions. It says the company thus made it appear the housing would remain affordable to target groups.

Company CEO Jeffrey Minter said he hadn't seen the lawsuit, but added Unidev Hawaii doesn't believe the county has any basis to sue.

Minter said his company was in the process of filing its own lawsuit against the county for more than $3 million in unpaid fees.
