Hawaiian society groups honor community leaders

The Royal Order of Kamehameha I and other Native Hawaiian society groups have named five community leaders as recipients of the Kalani Ali'i Awards.

The recipients will be honored at the 2009 'Aha Hipu'u luncheon Saturday at the Hale Koa Hotel.

The recipients were selected for their contributions to the survivial of the Hawaiian culture and language.

The five are U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka, composer and educator Rev. Ida Chun, retired Kawaiaha'o Church pastor William Kaina, Hawaiian language advocate and composer Larry Kimura and cultural food and language expert Adelaide Sylva.

The awards are presented by the four Hawaiian Royal Benevolent Societies on O'ahu: Royal Order of Kamehameha I (along with Na Wahine Hui O Kamehameha I), 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu, Hale O Na Ali'i O Hawai'i and the Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors-Mamakakaua.

The luncheon is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person. For tickets, call Bill Souza at 282-3943.
