A plan to bury Michael Jackson at his sprawling Neverland ranch in California fizzled yesterday, leaving details about his funeral undecided as another mystery was solved: His newly unveiled will says his mother should raise his children, or failing her, Diana Ross.
The changing funeral circumstances disappointed many Jackson fans who had descended on the estate in the rolling hills near Santa Barbara with the hope of attending a public viewing.
Jackson's 7-year-old will, filed yesterday in a Los Angeles court, puts his entire estate into a family trust and names his 79-year-old mother, Katherine, and his children as the beneficiaries. The will estimated the value of his estate at more than $500 million.
The will appoints Katherine Jackson as the children's guardian, with Ross, a longtime friend of Michael Jackson, named successor guardian if something happens to his mother.
NEW JACKSON MUSIC WILL KEEP ON COMING
Those familiar with Michael Jackson's vaults say the pop star has left behind a trove of unreleased music.
Executives and lawyers who know the material anticipate meeting the swelling demand of fans with unreleased tracks from studio sessions of some of Jackson's best albums, as well as songs more recently recorded with Akon and will.i.am.
Tommy Mottola, the former chairman and CEO of Sony Music, which owns the distribution rights to Jackson's music, described the unreleased material as "endless."
Mottola said new and repackaged releases "could go on for years and years — even more than Elvis."
SALINGER GETS 'CATCHER' SEQUEL QUASHED
A Swedish author whose new book was promoted as a sequel to J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" cannot publish it in the United States because it too closely mirrors Salinger's classic without adequate parody or critique, a judge ruled yesterday.
U.S. District Judge Deborah Batts in Manhattan ruled in a lawsuit brought by the 90-year-old reclusive author against the publishers of "60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye."
Batts said Swedish author Fredrik Colting had "taken well more from 'Catcher,' in both substance and style, than is necessary for the alleged transformative purpose of criticizing Salinger and his attitudes and behavior."
She said Colting's claim that he also wrote the book to critically examine Salinger's most famous character, Holden Caulfield, is "problematic and lacking in credibility."
YES, ELDEST JONAS BROTHER IS ENGAGED
The eldest Jonas brother, Kevin, and his girlfriend Danielle Deleasa are engaged, his spokeswoman confirmed yesterday.
The 21-year-old Jonas is one-third of the popular Jonas Brothers boy band, along with Joe and Nick Jonas.
In a statement, Kevin's parents, Kevin Sr. and Denise Jonas, said they are "filled with joy."
The young couple have not yet set a date. Their engagement was first reported by People magazine.
