KAHUKU — Kahuku overcame a six-point deficit with under two minutes remaining in regulation and then outscored Kaimuki 13-6 in overtime last night for a pulsating 68-61 O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball victory.

A vocal home crowd of about 450 watched the Red Raiders — ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 9-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. Kaimuki, ranked No. 5, fell to 5-3 as its five-game win streak ended.

"It was a great game," said Kahuku guard Jray Galeai, who scored four points and grabbed four rebounds in overtime and finished with a game-high 25 points. "Kaimuki is a well-coached team, and they have great players. But our coach (Hiram Akina) just told us that in games like this, we have to dig down deeper and keep our composure."

The Bulldogs led, 51-45, after two free throws by Jason Nutter with 2:09 left in regulation, but Irwin Ah-Hoy drained two 3-pointers — his first two baskets of the game — to help the Red Raiders eventually tie it at 55-55 on Kona Schwenke's layup with eight seconds remaining.

A halfcourt shot attempt by Kaimuki was long, sending the game into OT.

Kahuku had gained its final possession of regulation with 14 seconds left after Bulldogs post Desmond Tautofi was called for a charging foul — his fifth foul of the game — while trying to advance the ball against full-court pressure. With Tautofi out, Galeai penetrated from the right side and then dished to Schwenke, a 6-foot-4 post who was under the basket but had yet to make a field goal.

"I thought about shooting, but I saw Kona and dropped it off for him," Galeai said. "I was like, 'Please make it.' After it went in, he said, 'Don't worry, I got you, man.' "

The Red Raiders started the extra period with a 7-0 run and Kaimuki could only get as close as 64-61 after Ryan Kakitani's 3-pointer with 52 seconds left.

"I felt good going into overtime," Akina said. "I think the boys knew inside that they were gonna come back. But Kaimuki is scary — nobody wants to play them now. Win or lose, this kind of game helps us; we needed a game like this."

David Taulung led the Bulldogs with 17 points and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals, but he fouled out with 1:34 remaining in OT and Kaimuki trailing 62-56.

"We were already hurt when Desmond fouled out, because that's our whole middle," Bulldogs coach Kelly Grant said. "But Kahuku played a hell of a game. Galeai just would take it to the hole every time."

Nehoa Akina added 14 points for the Red Raiders. Jason Nutter added 14 points for Kaimuki and Tautofi, who sat out the first period, contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.
