A three-car accident initiated when one car crossed the center median on Farrington Highway left one person dead, one in critical condition and two others in serious condition.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, a 1985 Buick two-door sedan driven by an 18-year-old man and heading west crossed the median and collided with an eastbound 1994 Toyota four-door sedan driven by a 36-year-old man around at 6:54 a.m.

The impact sent the Toyota into the outer east-bound lane, where it was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet four-door sedan driven by a 72-year-old woman.

The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene, the seventh traffic fatality of the year compared with five at the same point last year.

The driver of the Buick was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the Chevrolet were also taken to Queen's in serious condition. A backseat passenger in the car was not injured.

It has not known if speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The accident closed Farrington Highway in both directions between Pohakunui Avenue and Laumania Street. Traffic was rerouted via bypass onto Laumania.
