Artist Mat Kubo sees himself in wood

By Advertiser staff

Local artist and public critical thinker (more on that later) Mat Kubo will showcase his latest body of work "Vanity" at Hawaii Pacific University's Art Gallery.

The exhibition, which will run through March 6, opens Sunday, Jan. 25 with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m..

Kubo's last project was more like an experiment in which he lived for three weeks only off of food that had he hunted, picked or bartered for himself, and the only transportation he used was his bike. Titled "Eco/Logic," the project was a commentary on sustainability and the importance of community to one's survival. He documented his three-week venture, which was later exhibited as an art installment at The ARTS at Marks Garage.

His current body of work is a series of 13 self-portraits, which were adapted from old photographs and cut into wood using a scroll saw.

"Vanity" is showing with Mark Fujishige's "Rudiments" at the HPU gallery located on the Hawaii Loa campus in Kaneohe. Admission to the gallery is free.
