Kahuku held off a fourth-quarter Moanalua rally that cut a 14-point lead to two and emerged with a 64-57 victory last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.

The Red Raiders, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division.

Na Menehune, ranked No. 10, fell to 3-2.

Kahuku led 56-42 entering the fourth period but Moanalua junior forward Marcus Monroe, who finished with a game-high 30 points, hit a 3-pointer with 2:03 remaining to cut the Red Raiders' lead to 59-57.

Kahuku junior guard Nehoa Akina then sank 5 of 7 free throws down the stretch to seal it as Na Menehune failed to score.

"It was pretty crazy," said Akina, who led Kahuku with 23 points, including 8 of 10 free throws in the final period for his team's only points that quarter. "We kept turning the ball over and we were giving them too many easy shots. But it's a good thing we were able to play good defense at the end."

The Red Raiders opted to milk the clock with the big lead. But that lead shrunk thanks in large part to Monroe, who scored nine points in the first six minutes of the final period.

"We tried to be more protective rather than attack (on offense), because we were not getting the calls going to the basket," Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said. "So I said we're gonna have to spread the floor and make them chase us."

But the plan almost backfired as Moanalua created some turnovers and chipped away at the lead. With the Red Raiders in a four-corner offense in the final minute, Na Menehune guard Randy Starks stole a pass by Akina and broke away to make a layup which would have tied the game at 59-59. But he was fouled on the floor before the shot and went to the line instead, where he missed both attempts.

Moanalua made just 6 of 15 free throws (40 percent).

"We got it down to two and had the ball, but we couldn't convert," Na Menehune coach Greg Tacon said. "I'm glad we're playing very well consistently against some very good teams, but to beat those very good teams we need to make less mistakes and make more free throws.

"But I'll tell you, I've seen 'Iolani, I've seen Kamehameha, I've seen Punahou ... and Kahuku is as legit as anybody in the state. They have a little bit of everything — they can shoot it, they get after you on defense, and even if you penetrate they have some big guys waiting in the paint."
