Hawaii Superferry said it used standard operating procedures today to avoid humpback whales on its morning voyage from Honolulu to Kahului Harbor.
The 350-foot, high-speed catamaran Alakai did not strike any whales, according to company officials and passengers interviewed by The Advertiser.
The Alakai turned away from a whale and came to a complete stop, part of its normal procedures in avoiding collisions, according to the company.
The vessel completed its trip and arrived at its usual time at Kahului Harbor just before 10 a.m.
NOAA Fisheries received a call about the incident and is looking into what happened, according to spokeswoman Wende Goo.
Conservation officers with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources spoke with arriving passengers at Kahului Harbor and left after learning no collision took place.
