Waikiki parade, rally honor King this week

Several events will be held this week to honor the memory and legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Tomorrow's events include:

  • The 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition Parade, 9 a.m., beginning at Ala Moana Park. The parade will continue through Waikiki and end at the Kapi'olani Park bandstand. A unity rally will follow in the park at about 11 a.m.

  • "Prayers for the Nation," 5:30 p.m., at the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, 229 Queen Emma Square. The event will honor King and offer prayers for the inauguration of Barack Obama.

  • Church of the Crossroads' Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peacemaker Award presentation, 7 p.m., at the church, 1212 University Ave. This year's recipient will be the Rev. Neal MacPherson, who retired last October after 20 years as pastor of the Church of the Crossroads.

  • Nagasaki Peace Bell Ringing Ceremony, 5:30 p.m., near Ho-nolulu Hale.

  • Makiki Community Cleanup and King Day of Service, set for Makiki District Park and Makiki Public Library. Led by Friends of the Makiki Community Learning Center, Hui o Makiki, and state Rep. Della Au Belatti, volunteers will repaint and refurbish the park and library to honor King. The events also are part of Obama's "Renew America Together" initiative. Information: 946-3291 or 393-0594.
