No. 4 Connecticut defeats St. John's

NEW YORK — Kemba Walker had played on the Madison Square Garden court in some high-profile high school games. Last night, he played there for the first time for Connecticut and it was quite a performance.

Walker, a graduate of New York's Rice High, had 21 points and used his speed to take over the fourth-ranked Huskies' 67-55 victory over St. John's.

"It was definitely good to be back here," the freshman point guard said after going 8-for-12 from the field and getting five rebounds and four assists. "I kind of exploded tonight offensively but I really wanted to win and have fun. I'm proud of my teammates."

Senior forward Jeff Adrien added 17 points and 11 rebounds in the fourth straight win for the Huskies (15-1, 4-1 Big East).

Sophomore guard Paris Horne had a career-high 24 points for the Red Storm (10-6, 1-3).

NO. 5 NORTH CAROLINA 83, VIRGINIA 61

Tyler Hansbrough scored 28 points, Ty Lawson had 19 and the visiting Tar Heels (15-2, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) used an 11-2 run to open up a 26-16 lead and the Cavaliers (7-7, 1-2) got no closer than five the rest of the way.

NO. 9 UCLA 83, ARIZONA 60

Nikola Dragovic scored 15 points to lead four teammates in double figures and the host Bruins (14-2, 4-0 Pac-10) jumped to a 42-28 halftime lead in rolling past the Wildcats (11-6, 2-3) for their 10th consecutive victory.

NO. 15 XAVIER 67, RHODE ISLAND 65

Derrick Brown had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Dante Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining for a 63-61 lead and the visiting Musketeers (14-2, 3-0 At1antic 10) never trailed again in beating the Rams (11-6, 0-2).

USC 61, NO. 16 ARIZONA STATE 49

Freshman DeMar DeRozan scored 19 of his career-high 22 points in the second half, and Keith Wilkinson's three-point play with 7:06 left put the host Trojans (11-5, 2-2 Pac-10) ahead to stay, 43-40, in their upset of the Sun Devils (14-3, 3-2).

NO. 17 BUTLER 78, LOYOLA OF CHICAGO 55

Freshman Shelvin Mack scored 20 points, and Matt Howard had 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks as the visiting Bulldogs (15-1, 6-0 Horizon League) routed the Ramblers (10-8, 2-4).

NO. 18 MINNESOTA 78, WISCONSIN 74

Lawrence Westbrook hit a trey to tie the game with two seconds left in regulation, then scored nine points in overtime and finished with 29, leading the visiting Gophers (16-1, 4-1 Big Ten) past the Badgers (12-5, 3-2).

UTAH STATE 65, FRESNO STATE 61

Jared Quayle scored 21 points, including two free throws in the final three seconds, to help the Aggies (16-1, 4-0) hold off the Bulldogs (7-10, 0-3), who got 32 points from Sylvester Seay.

NEW MEXICO STATE 74, IDAHO 71

Jahmar Young had 15 points and 14 rebounds, and made two free throws with 19 seconds left to give the host Aggies (9-9, 3-2) a 73-71 lead in turning back the Vandals (8-9, 2-2).

NEVADA 77, BOISE STATE 63

Armon Johnson scored 25 points, Luke Babbitt added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and the host Wolf Pack (10-7, 3-1) used a 9-0 run in the final six minutes to break open the game and beat the Broncos (12-4, 3-1).

PACIFIC WEST MEN

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 82, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 65

Adrian den Dulk scored 19 points, Jason Curtis added 16 and the Sea Warriors (7-5, 1-2) pulled away from a 34-31 halftime lead to beat the Argonauts (4-10, 0-5) at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 105: CHAMINADE 97

Lucas Alves scored 28 points and Virgil Buensuceso had 18 points and 10 assists, leading the Seasiders (10-1, 3-0) over the Silverswords (6-7, 3-2) at McCabe Gym.

RANKED WOMEN

NO. 12 MARYLAND 65, CLEMSON 56

Marissa Coleman had 19 points, Lynetta Kizer added 15 and the visiting Terps (13-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) held off a late rally to beat the Tigers (10-7, 1-3) for the eighth straight time.

PACIFIC WEST WOMEN

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 67, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 61

Taylor Craig and Mana Hopkins each scored 14 points, and Tiffany Wilson and Paris Gravely added 10 apiece as the Sea Warriors (5-8, 2-0) rallied to beat the Argonauts (5-11, 2-3) at Neal Blaisdell Arena.
