KAHUKU — Even without its marquee player, Kahuku had too much for Kalaheo last night and pulled away for a 52-36 victory in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.
The Red Raiders improved to 3-0 in the Red Conference Eastern Division, while the defending East champion Mustangs dropped to 2-1.
Despite the tough road obstacle, Kalaheo actually looked to be in good position to steal an upset win early on as Kahuku guard Jray Galeai — a first-team OIA East all-star last season — was in Provo, Utah, on a football recruiting visit to Brigham Young University.
The Mustangs also did a good job defending another sharp-shooting starting guard, junior Nehoa Akina, to five points. Kalaheo even led 20-14 late in the first half before the Red Raiders rallied to forge a 20-20 halftime tie.
But the Mustangs suffered through a 5 1/2-minute scoring drought overlapping the end of the third period and the early part of the fourth, during which Kahuku stretched a 32-29 lead into a 47-31 advantage. Kalaheo finally broke the run on Richard Preza-Haynes' jumper with 4:24 remaining, but that would be it until both teams emptied their benches with under two minutes left and the score 50-33.
"Between Galeai and Akina, that's over 30 points out of their lineup, but we still gotta score more than 35 to win," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado. "We went 3 for 9 from the (free-throw) line in the third quarter, and we missed too many shots under the basket."
The Red Raiders also did a good job containing Kalaheo guard Aaron Fernandez, who hit seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points in a victory over Kaimuki on Thursday. Fernandez finished with 13 points last night, but made only four field goals (no 3s) and was shut out in the fourth period.
Mustangs post Matt Gasparine, who had 23 points and 12 rebounds Thursday, was limited to six points and seven rebounds last night.
"Our post play really stepped up and our defense played well," Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said.
