Illness forces NCAA chief Brand to cut travel

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — NCAA president Myles Brand has an unspecified illness that could keep him from appearing at the organization's annual convention in Washington, D.C., next week.

NCAA spokesman Bob Williams released few details on the illness today other than to say it was forcing the 66-year-old Brand to restrict his travel and personal appearances.

"His schedule is going to be determined on a day-to-day basis. He's reduced his travel," Williams said.

The illness was first reported Friday by USA Today, which cited an internal NCAA memo that said Brand had recently been diagnosed.

Williams said he could not say whether Brand would participate in the four-day meeting that begins Wednesday. Brand is scheduled to deliver a speech on the state of the NCAA on Thursday.

Brand, formerly the president of Indiana University, has led the NCAA since January 2003.
