The widely anticipated opening of new lanes on Fort Weaver Road that were scheduled for this month have been delayed until February due to the recent rains.

Completion for the overall Fort Weaver widening Phase 2 project, which would expand the area from 'A'awa Drive to Geiger Road from four lanes to six, is now scheduled to finish in October. That's two months later than the August date Department of Transportation officials had suggested in November.

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., the contractor, will be working on median area curbing and drainage, which will require closing an adjacent lane, DOT spokeswoman Tammy Mori said. That may delay full use of the third lane until median work is completed from the north end of project to just south of Old Fort Weaver Road, Mori said. Two lanes on both sides will be open at all times.

Work is being done on sidewalks; fencing and guardrails north of Old Fort Weaver Road; roadway excavation including the installation of subbase and paving; the Honouliuli Stream Pedestrian Bridge; new traffic signals at 'A'awa; and the installation of new highway lighting poles.
