Maui man died from single stab wound

KAHULUI, Maui — Maui stabbing victim John Shaniyo, 33, of Kahului, died from a single stab wound to his abdomen that severed a main artery, according to the results of an autopsy conducted today.
Shaniyo's 23-year-old girlfriend has been charged with second-degree murder for the attack, which occurred Monday at the couple's rented home at 107 W. Kaua'i St. Rachael Berta was arrested shortly after the incident and was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Neighbors told police they heard the pair arguing around 1 p.m. Monday and then saw the woman leave in a car. Police later found her nearby at Kahului Union Church and recovered a knife from the home that is believed to have been used in the stabbing.
Shaniyo died at 9:55 p.m. Monday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
