Girls hoops jamboree Saturday at Manoa

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's top female basketball players will compete in the 16th annual Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree Saturday at Manoa Gym.

Twenty-four teams in three divisions will compete in the day-long tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. The divisions are 12 and under, 14 and under, and high school/college alumnae.

Eight teams will compete in each division.

Games will tip off on the hour in the single-elimination tournament.

The public is invited and admission is free. Donations are welcome, with proceeds going to the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann said holding the Jamboree the day after the state championship "allows us to include more Neighbor Island players, since many of them will be here for the state tournament.

"We'll feature the top talent from across the islands and that should make for a terrific event."

Hannemann established the jamboree as an annual showcase for local female basketball players.

"This began in 1994 as a small step toward gender equity, and has, in the years since then, featured just about every top high school and college player in Hawai'i at one time or another," Hannemann said.
