The Farrington girls basketball team is big and physical.

No secret there.

But the Governors also played the full 94 feet to beat 'Iolani, 68-51, last night in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships at Kaimuki High.

Farrington, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, put the game away by outscoring 'Iolani 20-6 in the third period behind its 2-2-1 full-court press.

The run gave Farrington, the No. 3 seed, a 49-30 advantage.

"We knew we weren't playing defense well in the first half," said Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu. "We had to step it up and we decided to keep the pressure on with our full-court press and we got some steals."

Farrington, which also dominated inside, will face No. 2 seed Konawaena in the semifinals tonight at 7 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.

The Governors were able to get three steals in the backcourt during the first half of the third period, which led to layups.

"It was still kind of rattling us in the first half, and we made an adjustment to go to a three-guard front in the second half, and not everybody remembered," said 'Iolani coach Marlene Zeug. "A little bit of confusion on the court, that's what threw people out of rhythm."

Natalie Mata scored six of her 12 points in the third period and five other Governors scored at least two.

"She's our spark plug on defense," Tatupu said of Mata. "She and Valerie Lesu have been our strong back-court players defensively. They usual spark our team to get them going."

Farrington (19-1) also scored in bunches inside and held a 60-41 rebounding advantage.

Sofia Foluamahina finished with 17 points and fellow post player Kirsten Liana added 11 for Farrington. Lesu added 10.

"We've been practicing and the coaches really wanted us to work the inside," said Foluamahina, who was 7 of 11 from the field. "That's our key."

Added Tatupu: "We knew we had the height advantage on them. They're a scrappy team. You can't take them lightly, but we also knew that with the height advantage on our side we had to capitalize on it. We expected the girls to try and pound the ball inside as much as we can."

In addition to dominating inside, the Governors also beat the smaller Raiders down the court for easy buckets and used solid interior passing.

Farrington, which led by as many as 26 late in the game, made 26 of 58 shots from the field, while 'Iolani made just 18 of 71, including 6 of 32 from 3-point range.

"We condition our girls at practice to be able to run the floor well on both ends of the court," Tatupu said.

KONAWAENA 50, BALDWIN 28

Konawaena freshman Emalia Galdeira already has mastered the basketball skills that most high school players take many years to master, if at all.

Galdeira scored, rebounded, played defense and passed effectively last night as No. 2 seed Konawaena overwhelmed Baldwin in a quarterfinal at Kaimuki High.

Galdeira's final stat line read: 17 points, 8 rebounds, 10 steals and 5 assists.

She Galdeira led the Wildcats in each category.

"Emalia is so talented and gifted with her speed," said Konawaena assistant coach Lloyd Tanaka. "She played her heart out and she created a lot for us when we needed it."

Konawaena, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, turned the game into a track meet with full-court man-to-man pressure.

"We're all fast and conditioned so we can get to our spots," said Galdeira, a 5-foot-8 guard/forward.

The Wildcats forced 26 turnovers, and leading the defensive charge was Galdeira, who created havoc for Baldwin by using great anticipation and quick hands.

Many of the steals led to layups.

"The rest of them played good defense and everyone else gave me opportunities to steal the ball," Galdeira said.

Baldwin's Shauna Ah Yen banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put her team up 9-8 with 3:58 left in the first period.

Up to that point, the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up had little trouble breaking the press.

"We haven't played in 10 days," Tanaka said. "We were trying to get our legs under us. We had a few girls under the weather last week, so hopefully this is the game we ironed it all out."

Konawaena (13-0) responded with a 13-2 run to end the quarter for a 21-11 lead, with Galdeira tallying six points.

Baldwin (11-5) scored the first four points of the second period to get within 21-15, but the Wildcats scored the final 10 points of the half.

During the run, Galdeira made a steal in the backcourt, dribbled down court and hit Kara Hanato-Smith under the basket with a nifty no-look pass for a layup.

"What she really does is she's real active; she gets her hands on a lot of balls," Tanaka said of Galdeira. "She creates a lot of steals and creates a lot of offense for us."

The Wildcats forced 20 turnovers in the first half.

Galdeira had 11 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists by halftime. She finished 8 of 14 from the field.

Ah Yen led the Bears with nine points.
