McCabe leads Kapa'a to 60-39 win over St. Andrew's

Kapa'a crashed its way through its tournament opener.

Leina'ala McCabe scored 14 points to lead three players in double figures and Kapa'a was a rebounding machine in a 60-39 win over St. Andrew's in yesterday's first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Basketball State Championships at Kalani High School.

Kapa'a (9-0), which won in front of a crowd of about 90, advances to face top-seeded Kahuku (14-1) in today's 7 p.m. quarterfinal at Kalani.

"We read their eyes (on defense) and we were quick on our timing," McCabe said.

With a mix of strong rebounding, sharp shooting and a stifling 1-3-1 zone, the Warriors ran away from the beginning. The Warriors outrebounded the Pride 39-18, including a 24-8 advantage on the offensive boards, and shot 52 percent from the field (27-of-52). Jondi Das scored 12 points and Leihua McCabe added 10.

"We did well on offensive rebounds and the other thing was we did pretty good from the field," Kapa'a coach Terry Maguire said. "I feel like our press, all year, it's been our defense."

Added Kapa'a's Mai'lika Napoleon: "Everybody is even more pumped that we can play the seeded girls."

Minna Watanabe scored 15 points, Noelani Kawashima had 11, and Shelley Wong had 10 for St. Andrew's (9-5).

Knowing the Warriors crash the boards, the Pride prepared for it. But the plan never really materialized with Kapa'a cleaning the glass from the beginning.

"We knew it, we planned for it," St. Andrew's coach Chad Mizunaka said. "We had a game plan. The first half, they didn't really do anything that surprised us. They just crashed the boards and that was it."

Kawashima's 3-pointer cut Kapa'a's lead to 6-3 midway through the first quarter. The Warriors then scored the next four points to lead 10-3, and gradually pulled away.

Kapa'a's zone shut down offensive threats Watanabe and Kawashima, who bombed from 3-point range the entire season.

"They never have been both off on the same night," Mizunaka said. "When one is off, the other one carries the team."

The Warriors led 26-14 at halftime and extended their lead in the third quarter. When the Pride pressed, the Warriors threw long passes for easy layups, including three straight that made it 43-21 with 2:17 remaining in the third.

In recent weeks, the Kapa'a boys soccer team won the D-II state title while its girls team placed second. That is extra motivation for the basketball team.

"If they can win states so can we," Das said. "You just have to put the heart in."
