It was a bad day to be No. 2 yesterday.

Seven No. 2 seeds fell in the first day of the Chevron/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Wrestling State Championships at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena. A total of 41 seeded wrestlers were bounced from championship contention.

Meanwhile, the Punahou boys look to have its third consecutive state title all but wrapped up. Of the 14 boys weight classes, Buffanblu wrestlers qualified for 11 of them.

"The semifinals are going to be an especially important round," Punahou coach Matt Oney said. "So I would say there's a lot of wrestling to go."

Punahou's Reid Oshiro — the No. 1 seed in 125 pounds — is the lone remaining seeded wrestler in the division. He meets 'Aiea's Jon-Ross Okuda in one semifinal while Kamehameha's Shayden Terukina takes on Maryknoll's Brandon Oshiro in the other.

"Even though this is my last year, I still want to treat this like any other tournament," said Reid Oshiro, who is the defending champion. "This is my fourth states, so there's not huge pressure, but the finality of it adds to it."

Brandon Oshiro, who entered the tournament unseeded, upset No. 2 seed Bill Takeuchi, of Pearl City, 7-5, in a preliminary round bout.

Takeuchi, who won at 119 pounds last year, is the second seed at 125 pounds.

Takeuchi got a pair of early takedowns and led throughout until Oshiro tied it at 5-5 on a late takedown with about 30 seconds left in the third period to force overtime. Oshiro eventually earned another takedown — and the win — about a minute into the sudden-death period.

Another top seed who remains in contention is Kaiser's Byron Apo at 135 pounds. Apo, who took second at the same weight last year, meets Punahou's Troy Murakawa in one semifinal while Mililani's Chad Diamond faces off against Kamehameha's Jacob Luning-Hoshino in the other.

"I took it as a privilege to be No. 1 and I want to keep it that way," Apo said. "After last year, I came out with a vengeance, it was definite motivation."

On the girls' side, Kahuku and Punahou are ahead of the pack in the team standings.

'Iolani senior Keiko Akamine — the No. 1 at 103 pounds — goes for her third straight state title. She faces Konawaena's Alexandria Aoki in one semifinal while Kahuku's Andrina Ramos and Kamehameha-Maui's Malia Medeiros meet in the other.

Roosevelt sophomore Marisa Fukunaga sent second-seeded Kaety Enos of Hawai'i Baptist to the consolation bracket of the 108-pound weight class with a 7-4 upset in the quarterfinal round.

Enos, who won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title last week, lost her contact lens than 30 seconds into the match, but still managed to take a 2-0 lead on a takedown midway through the opening period. However, Fukunaga managed a reversal to tie it at two to begin the second period.

Fukunaga earned two near-fall points in the second period before adding another point on an escape early in the third period to make it 5-2. She quickly scored another takedown before Enos earned a late escape point.

"I didn't really know what to expect because we haven't wrestled each other since last year's state tournament," Fukunaga said. "But I knew that I wanted to be aggressive when I was on top."

Another No. 2 seed fell in the 120-pound weight class as 'Aiea's Joy Yamashita blanked Baldwin's Kayla Giannotto, 4-0, also in the quarterfinal round.

Giannotto, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, gave away two points through stalling penalties in the first and third periods and Yamashita, working from the down position, scored two more points on a reversal in the second period.

"I think I did pretty good, I'm happy with my performance," said Yamashita, who beat Giannotto in the final of December's Maui Invitational Tournament. Yamashita, a junior, a will meet Punahou freshman Mindy Chow in today's semifinal round.

Matches begin at 10 a.m. The girls finals will begin at 3 p.m. with the boys to follow.
