INDIANAPOLIS — Alabama All-American tackle Andre Smith unexpectedly left the combine before working out Saturday.

Smith told the NFL Network he flew back to Atlanta to workout with his personal trainer and prepare for his pro day workouts next month in Tuscaloosa.

Earlier in the week, Smith had told teams he might not workout, but he failed to notify combine organizers when he decided to leave early.

"If I had the chance to do it all over, I wouldn't have handled it the way I did," Smith told the NFL Network for a story posted on NFL.com. "I should have told my group leader that I was leaving, and I didn't. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers or step on any toes. I didn't mean to grandstand anyone at the combine. That was not my intention at all, and I apologize for my mistake."
