Hanauma Bay reopened this morning

Advertiser Staff

Hanauma Bay, a world-class snorkeling spot popular with residents and visitors alike, was reopened this morning after just a handful of box jellyfish were found there.

The bay was closed yesterday after more than 20 of the tiny, but potentially deadly, marine jellies were found in less than an hour.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said people who visit Hanauma Bay today should check with lifeguards before entering the water.

There is no word yet on beaches in the area from Ala Moana to Waikiki where 780 jellyfish were counted yesterday, which was the peak of the monthly jellyfish influx, which typically occurs 10 days after a full moon.
