Gordie Shaw, a veteran coach of offensive linemen, has been hired as the University of Hawai'i football team's offensive line coach.

Brian Smith, who was the offensive line coach last season, will be reassigned within the offense, UH head coach Greg McMackin said.

Shaw, who has more than 30 seasons of coaching experience, was the offensive coordinator at South Dakota this past year.

Before that, he was the offensive line coach at Minnesota and Wyoming.

At Minnesota where he spent 14 seasons, Shaw recruited and coached center Greg Eslinger, who was the 2005 Rimington Award winner. He also coached or recruited six of Minnesota's All-American lineman. Players such as Ben Hamilton, Greg Eslinger, Mark Setterstrom and Matt Spaeth have gone on to play in the NFL.

Last season, Shaw guided USD's offense to saw the Coyotes rank in the top 10 nationally in several categories. Their offensive scoring ranked tied for fourth nationally (37.5 points per game), while their offense ranked sixth at 461.8 total yards per game.
