A woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center this morning after being struck by a vehicle on Pi'ikoi Street, near the intersection of Pi'ikoi and King streets.

She was originally listed in critical condition, but has been upgraded to serious condition, police said. She suffered abrasions and possible broken bones, police said.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said paramedics were sent to the scene at 9:08 a.m.

Police said the 23-year-old pedestrian was struck by a Nissan sport utility vehicle driven by a 38-year-old woman.

"Well, right now all we know is, it looks like it's a female — looks like she was in the crosswalk, (and the) lady making a left turn on King Street, blocked by the sun, didn't see her. (The victim) ended up underneath the vehicle, that's all we know right now," said police Sgt. Ron Pinho-Goldman.

Police estimated the injured woman was pinned beneath the vehicle that struck her for 10 to 15 minutes before firefighters were able to free her.

The driver of the vehicle was taken in stable condition to a nearby hospital as a precaution, Cheplic said.

She was suffering more from anxiety than anything, Cheplic said.
