Falcons soar past Na Ali'i in OIA playoffs

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

'AIEA — Ashlyn Onaga scored a game-high 27 points, including five of Kalani's 10 3-pointers, and the Falcons had a 17-0 run at the end of the third period en route to blowing past 'Aiea, 71-51, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball playoff action.

The Falcons, seeded No. 4 out of the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division, improved to 8-6 in league play and will face East No. 6 Moanalua (5-9) in tonight's third-round action at Pearl City.

Tipoff is set for about 6:30, 15 minutes after the 5 p.m. winners' bracket game between East champ Farrington (13-0) and East No. 3 Roosevelt (9-5).

Kalani, which sank nine 3-pointers (by six different girls) in Tuesday's first-round victory over Kapolei, has had more balance on offense since the return of senior post Violet Alama about four weeks ago. Alama, a 6-foot forward who signed a national letter of intent with Cal State Northridge in November, tore an anterior cruciate ligament in her knee last summer and the Falcons were 1-3 before she returned to the starting lineup.

They are 7-3 since.

"She helps us a lot, not just with her shooting, but also her rebounding," said Onaga, a senior guard. "The other teams have to concentrate on her in the post and she can kick it back out to us. We have a lot more confidence now; she gave us a big lift."

'Aiea took a 35-34 lead on Emily Tausaga's baseline jumper with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter, but Alama answered with a layup to start Kalani on a 17-0 run to end the period.

"We got out of offense for just a little while, and (the Falcons) took advantage," Na Ali'i coach Mike Yen said.

Kalani then began the fourth period with a 9-4 run capped by Corie Kuia's 3-pointer to go up, 60-39, and 'Aiea could not get closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Na Ali'i, the West's No. 1 seed, fell to 10-3 and into tonight's losers' bracket game against East runner-up McKinley (9-4). That game is set for about 6:30 p.m. at Moanalua.
