The 33rd annual Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Classic is scheduled to start this weekend at Makaha Beach.
This year's contest will feature wave-riding in 15 divisions, including unique categories such as bully boarding, team bodysurfing, tandem surfing, paipo boarding and canoe surfing.
New to this year's event is the traditional alaia board division. Alaia boards are like long wooden planks.
There are also standard divisions such as longboarding and stand-up paddle surfing. Many of Hawai'i's top professional surfers are expected to enter those divisions.
The contest was created by Richard "Buffalo" Keaulana in 1977 as a way to unite the Leeward Coast community. It has been run every year since then by Keaulana and his family.
The contest is scheduled to run tomorrow, Sunday and Monday, and then continue next weekend.
Entries are still being accepted. For information call 668-9712.

O'BRIEN TO COMPETE IN BODYBOARD CONTEST
Jamie O'Brien, who is most recognized for his skills as a surfer at Pipeline, has been granted a wildcard entry into the upcoming Turbo Pipeline Pro bodyboarding contest.
"Jamie is one of the most innovative surfers in the world and an astounding waterman, so I would not put it past him to blow some minds at his home break," said Terry McKenna, general manager of the International Bodyboarding Association.
The contest is scheduled to run on the best three days between Feb. 17 and 27 at the Banzai Pipeline.
It is the first stop on the 2009 IBA world tour. Top-ranked Hawai'i bodyboarders in the contest include Kaua'i siblings Jeff and David Hubbard, and Mike Stewart of the Big Island.
