Hawaii water polo falls in final

Michelle Stein scored three goals and Ilse van der Meijden made 15 saves as No. 1-ranked Southern California defeated No. 4 Hawai'i, 11-3, yesterday in the championship water polo match of the Stanford Invitational at Stanford, Calif.

Kelly Mason, Monika Eggens and Ryan Hanson-Swaner each scored a goal for Hawai'i, which advanced to the final after going 3-0 in pool play.

Earlier in the day, Eggens and Leonie van Der Molen each scored four goals and Serena Bredin made eight saves as UH beat San Jose State, 12-7.


BASKETBALL

HPU WINS, LOSES

Jeff Ingram scored 15 points and Rishi Kakad hit the go-ahead jumper with 5:39 to play as Hawai'i Pacific edged Notre Dame de Namur, 59-57, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Belmont, Calif.

Kakad, whose jumper made it 55-53, later added two free throws to close the scoring for the Sea Warriors (9-9, 3-5). Bennie Murray led the Argos (5-16, 0-9) with 19 points.

In the women's game, Britni Rathke had 16 points and 17 rebounds as the Argos (7-14, 4-5) beat the Sea Warriors (8-12, 5-3), 75-63. Tiffany Wilson led HPU with 20 points.


BOXING

CHAPMAN PREVAILS

Leland Chapman, a member of the Dog the Bounty Hunter show, beat Samuel Quel by unanimous decision Saturday night in an amateur boxing event at Palolo District Park gym.

The 135-pound matchup, part of the fourth annual Clint Shelton Memorial Match Event, was selected the outstanding bout of the night.

Other winners were: Garin Rabellizsa, Nainoa Dung-Cummings, John Galdones, Dustin Somera, Greg Ishikawa, Kauhi Tomas, Dustin Doshier and Kaeo Myer.
