A 17-year-old exchange student from Japan drowned at Hapuna Beach Park on the Big Island yesterday morning during a field trip, police said.

The boy was found unresponsive in shallow waters off the beach. Lifeguards attempt- ed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before fire rescue personnel took him to North Hawai'i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy's name was being withheld pending notification of his family.
