Modern couples on the lookout for a little extra Valentine's Day romance would do well to embrace the new color on love's favorite day.
It's green.
Impress your mate — or your date — with organic roses grown without pesticides. Florists don't stock them in the Islands, so you will have to order online, at sites such as organic.bouquet.com. But green love will cost you: A dozen roses that are certifiably organic sell for $49.95 plus up to $26.95 to ship them to Hawai'i, says June Lee, a marketing spokeswoman in Organic Bouquet's San Francisco office.
Balance that bill by turning off the lights. Jodi Helmer, author of "The Green Year," suggests a candlelit dinner. And who says "kilowatt hours, baby" isn't a sexy thing to whisper in your lover's ear?
Of course, a bottle of organic or biodynamic wine can be green even when it's red. The natural approach has produced some fine wine, says Jason "Cass" Castle, beverage manager and sommelier for Merriman's Kapalua.
"Some of the best wines in the world are being produced that way," Castle says.
A biodynamically produced wine means it was made on a vineyard that views itself as a holistic living system, from using farm animals to fertilize the soil to planting with lunar cycles. An organically produced wine means it was made from grapes grown without the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides.
"Anyone willing to invest the extra effort to become certified in those categories, really cares about the product they put out and that transforms into flavor," he says.
For the best selection — and educated advice — seek out a wine shop and plan on spending at least $27, Castle says.
Valentine's Day requires cards — a billion are sent worldwide each year, according to http://www.greenlivingtips.com — so why not find one printed on recycled paper? Or send an e-card.
And finally, for eco-sexual couples willing to share a bit more intimacy, http://www.treehugger.com suggests you put some wood in your lingerie with sexy undies made from Lenpur, a sustainable textile from www.g98.fr that comes from white pine tree clippings.
