Mililani boys beat Radford in OIA Red West, 69-62

MILILANI — Even with "Senior Night" applying to only four players, Mililani played last night's game against Radford as if it was its last and came away with a statement-making 69-62 victory in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.
The Trojans improved to 8-2 in the OIA's Red Conference Western Division and avenged an earlier defeat to the Rams, who are ranked No. 8 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media but fell to 7-2.
"It feels good to beat them after they beat us (65-57, on Jan. 14)," said Mililani forward Nick Demusis, a 6-foot-3 senior, who finished with a team-high 17 points last night. "We like playing at home — this atmosphere is loud with a lot of (fans) yelling, and we feel more confident here."
Demusis hit a layup with two seconds remaining in the first half, putting the Trojans up 27-26.
Mililani then outscored Radford 24-9 in the third period, including six fast-break baskets highlighted by Demusis' slam dunk with 2:18 left that gave the Trojans a 48-31 lead.
Mililani then built the lead to 57-37 early in the fourth quarter and the Rams never got closer than the final margin.
"It was rough for us today; we didn't rebound and we made too many turnovers, especially at the wrong time," Radford coach Wayne Keys said. "Mililani is big and physical; they're a good team."
Trojans coach Ed Gonzales said his young team learned from their earlier loss to the Rams and have grown in the three weeks since.
"We had to stay out of foul trouble this time, and the seniors played focused," Gonzales said. "We kind of knew who their shooters were — Quentin (Kimura) had 23 points last time and I think (Derrell) Lee had 17, so we focused on them and shut them down for the most part."
Kimura finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers and Lee also had 12 points on four field goals. Tony Reid scored a game-high 18 points to lead Radford.
Reid Pangelinan scored 14 points and Hassan Richardson added 10 for the Trojans.
